9 Reasons Why Nigerian Universities Are Better Than Polytechnics – You Agree?

The difference between a university and a polytechnic is widely known, likewise the difference between BSc and HND.
Even though it is believed that everyone has a chance to be successful no matter what you do or the level of education you could attain, but there are some facts that should be emphasized, not forcriticism or hate, but for us all to get educated in some ways.
So right here are some 9 Reasons Why University BSc Is Better Than Polytechnic HND
1. Quality of Lecturers– You cannot just compare the experience and expertise of lecturers they have in a university setting to that of the polytechnic. Most university lecturers are professors and PhD holders with years of teaching coupled with experience to show for it.In fact, most Master degree holders in some universities are mere assistant lecturers. This is not so for our polytechnics where most of their so-called ‘experienced’ lecturers are mere BSc holders who are university graduates. Most rectors of polytechnics are Msc holders, though not all, only a few are PhD holders. At times, even corps members lecture in some polytechnics.
2. Qualification For Entrance– Thequalification for entrance into the university is more strict compared to that of polytechnics. Obviously, JAMB UTME cut off for universities is somewhat high, at times, this leads to frustration of jambites, which makes them resortto polytechnics.
3. Funding From Government– Nigerian Universities are much more funded by government than polytechnics. Funding is one of theways to determine the quality of an institution. If you notice, the government and the media in general pay more attention to the demand of ASUU over ASUP. Though, some universities might decide to play narrow with the funds. That is why products of universities are always trained better than those of polytechnics.
4. Research Work– Universities are the foundation of researches and this is the root of progress in institutions. Even though the quality of research work in Nigerian universities is poor, it is still far better compared to that of polytechnics that do very negligible or feeble research works.
5. Beautiful And Large Campus Environment– Mere structures and architectures of buildings in an institution goes a long way in telling about the quality of such institution. Taking OAU as an instance, whether OAU is still the most beautiful campus in Africa or not is an argument meant for another day. But No polytechnic in Nigeria can even compete with theinstitution in terms of structures and its landmass.
6. Quality of students– It’s a no-brainier that the most brilliant students go to universities. In most polytechnics, all you see is dejected and old students who have taken JAMB UTME more thana couple times but no luck, then resorted to such institution. Just few of polytechnic students are young and smart, no hate.
7. Scholarships Preference– Reputable scholarship bodies hardly notice polytechnic studentswhen it comes to scholarship offering. Only university undergraduates would have the opportunity to apply for such scholarships. Not only at the undergraduate level but also postgraduate scholarships. Meaning, there i hardly scholarships for polytechnicstudents. This is another form of discrimination in some sense.
8. Market Demand– Market preference for BSc is far higher than for OND/HND. OND/HND holders are most times seen as middle level manpower though that was the intention when polytechnics were initially created. There are more opportunities for BSc holders even outside the country and world wide.
9. Self Esteem– An average BSc holder tends to have more confidence and self-belief than a HND holder.
This is however not the fault of HND holders, they only have to face stiff discrimination in the employment market, thus having a negative impact on their self esteem.

It is just a mere observation from an average human being who is subject to flaws and bound to write whatsoever words that form from the letters he probably randomly typed. No matter the certificate, the sky is not the limit.

UTME Admission Screening: Good WASSCE result is key —Varsities

THE hope of many students seeking admission into
Nigerian universities may be dashed if the admission
screening in 2017 is based on students’ WASSCE results
and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
scores. Recall that in 2016, the Minister of Education,
Mallam Adamu Adamu, abolished post-UTME as a means
of admitting candidates into tertiary institutions.

Meanwhile, in 2017, over one million, eight hundred
thousand (1,800,000) students sat for UTME, for a total
of 800,000 admission spaces in tertiary institutions. Going
by the huge number of candidates and limited admission
spaces, various institutions have since 2016, resolved to
admit students by screening and awarding marks to their
WASSCE results and JAMB scores.

Thus, for an institution to select the best students from
the multitude, instead of conducting post-UTME as was
the case previously, all that is needed now is to grade
candidates’ O’Level results and score them over 40 per
cent. The breakdown shows that when a candidate
submits his/her O’Level result for screening, five O’Level
subjects relating to his proposed programme of study
will be examined and marks awarded based on what he
scored in WASSCE.

Hence, A1 is awarded 8%, B2-7%, B3-6%, C4-5%, C5-4%
and C6-3%. Total marks for anyone with five A1s is 40
per cent. What this means is that if a candidate has five
‘A1s’, he has gotten a maximum 40 per cent. A student
with five B2s, would score 35 per cent, five B3s, 30 per
cent, five C4s, gets 25 per cent, five C5s, 20 per cent and
five C6s would score just 15 per cent.

Besides, since institutions discovered that many
candidates who choose their schools have above UTMEs
cut-off marks, they have also graded UTME’s scores into
percentages. If a UTME candidate has 180 to 189, he is
assumed to have scored 10 per cent. If he scored
between 190 and199, he gets 20 per cent. For those who
scored between 200 and 209, they have 30 per cent while
someone who scored between 210 and 219 gets 40 per
cent. Those who scored between 220 and 229, earn 50
per cent and a student with 230 and above gets the
maximum 60 per cent.

Apparently, a student who has five A1s in WASSCE and
also scored 230 and above in UTME, is certrain to be
admitted because he has 40 per cent in WASSCE and 60
per cent in UTME.

Securing admission

For a student with five C6s in WASSCE, and between 190
and 199 in UTME, the chances of securing admission in
public institutions is dicey because he has only scored 15
per cent in WASSCE and 20 per cent in UTME. His total
percentage score is 35 per cent. With this system, it
means that students aspiring to secure admission into
Nigerian public universities  must study hard and be
academically sound to obtain A or B grades in WASSCE to
stand a chance.

The initiators of this innovation believe it will propel
students to aim high so as to obtain A1 in five subjects.

Also, the issue of paying for post-UTME and travelling
long distances for the examination would be a thing of
the past.

Exam racketeering

Meanwhile, as good as it appears on the surface, many
stakeholders who spoke with Vanguard disagreed, noting
that the development will breed and promote examination
racketeering in secondary schools and examination
bodies. They argued that some students and parents
could go to any length to obtain the five A1s in order to
guarantee their admission.

Unfortunately, many times, students with C5 and C6 in
their WASSCE results may prove to be better
academically than those with A1 because they read and
wrote the examination themselves, hence the results
represent true reflections of their academic abilities. It
has also been noticed that many students with A1s in
their WASSCE cannot defend such results because the
exams were probably written for them.

Besides, where there is no proper monitoring from
relevant examination authorities, tertiary institutions can
engage in sale of admission to the highest bidders so the
posibility of children of the poor securing admission will
be slim. There had been reports from students about how
their names were once pasted on admission notice
boards, but replaced by other students’ names; a
situation such school authorities could not defend when
contacted.

Admission for highest bidder
Reacting to the scrapping of Post-UTME and using
WASSCE result as yardstick for admission, Olamide
Azeez, a 100-Level student of Yabatech said post-UTME
gives institutions the privilege of knowing the type of
students they want to admit. He added that post-UTME
helped students to prepare more academically before
they enter the university.

Also reacting, Miss Damilola Adeleke, a final year student
of Biology, Yabatech said: “The scrapping of post-UTME
does not favour everybody. Post-UTME helped students to
boost their chances of securing admission into
universities.”

On his part, Mr. Akinbiyi Folorunsho from the Department
of Mathematics of the institution said: ”Without post-
UTME, there will be high rate of examination malpractice
in secondary schools. Post-UTME is preferable because it
will be 50-50 admission chances for every seeker.”

Adeyinka Adebayo, an undergraduate at Laspotech said he
supports post-UTME, adding that there will be high rate
of unadmitted students without post-UTME.

“If care is not taken, the situation will lead to admission
backlog, because many students will keep doing JAMB
every year without hope of getting admission.”

Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has

It, however, said to set the records straight only seven
suspected students were arrested for impersonation by

See 5 Things That Will Happen In 2017 JAMB That Never Happened Before

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made some major changes in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for 2017.

We updated some information on the examination earlier. More adjustments have however been made, and these are some of the things that will happen this year, that have never happened before:

1. Fourth Choice
JAMB has also introduced a fourth choice of school option for candidates but would only be able to select only one government school while filling out their forms online.

2. No choosing of public university
The following was also announced: The new registration platform will now be first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice and not most preferred, preferred etc as it was.

Candidates’ first choice can be a College, University, Innovative Enterprises Institutions or Polytechnic/Monotechnic. However, if a candidate makes a Public University his first choice, he will not have any public University to choose for 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice.

He will have on the remaining three choices, a College, a Polytechnic, Private University and IEI’S. However, candidates for the 2017 UTME can now select NCE (College) or ND (Polytechnic/ Monotechnic) as their 1st choice up to 3rd choice and the 4th IEI.

They can select the IEI (Innovative Enterprise Institution, ND) as their 1st choice up to the 4th choice, but can only pick a public university once.

3. JAMB form sold late
The organizers of the major examinations in the country, including JAMB met to avoid a clash in schedules and in order to have a harmonized timetable.

An agreement was reached at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24, after a meeting with National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Business and Technical Examination (NABTEB) to harmonize the timetable.

This is one reason the registration is yet to begin.

4. Mock UTME
While speaking the body also announced that plans were in place for a mock UTME and this might explain the delay in beginning the sales of the examination forms. So if you are preparing, start your preparations now, so you can do well in both the mock and the real deal.

5. No scratch card
Speaking on the issue of scratch card, the registrar explained that one reason for the delay was due to issues the board had with sale of scratch cards.

He said that whereas candidates used to buy scratch cards to access the forms online previously, they planned to cancel that since it had been abused thoroughly.

According to Daily Trust, he said: “What we want to do is for students to pay directly to government coffers and we are working out the process of doing so to avoid the type of abuse that it has been subjected to.

“So, we want to sell directly and to make sure that candidates pay into TSA account. We have cases of students saying their scratch cards got burnt, others saying their scratch cards were swallowed by snakes or lost in an accident.”

10 Examination Tips For All Students In 2017 Session -

Examination, though as argued by many is not the true test of intelligence, but in the world's standard today, it provides a measure with which the extent of your intelligence can be ascertained. Below are some key points to note before any examination you are about to face,

Pray before you start.

During the exam, organise your time effectively.

Read the question carefully, underline all the relevant words and stick rigidly to the question as set.

For every question, try to re-check the question when answering it.

Do not cheat or get involve in any form of examination malpractices.

Goodluck In All Your Exams!!!

JAMB Orders CBT Operators To Upgrade Their Centres Or Lose License -

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has in preparation for the conduct of the 2017 UTME has emphasized again that all licensed operators of Computer Based Test (CBT) centres must increase the capacity of their centres to accommodate 250 candidates at a sitting.

This was contained in a document issues by JAMB.

According to JAMB, there's an agreement with all CBT proprietors of CBT centres concerning the standardization of all CBT centres, in terms of capacity, equipment, materials, competent human resources and security appliances including Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems.

The document warned that failure to comply with the new set of rules would result in automatic disqualification of the operator and outright withdrawal of its license.

2017 UTME & Direct Entry Registration Begins On March, 2017

The Registrar of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board [JAMB] has also revealed when the 2017 UTME and Direct Entry Registration is scheduled to commence after announcing the date for the 2017 UTME examination.

According to Prof. Oloyede on Monday 20th February, 2017 while briefing newsmen said the reason for the delay and the commencement of the UTME and Direct Entry Registration is to check Malpractices.

He also said that 10 officials of JAMB has been handed to the police for investigation in connection with fraud associated with sales of scratch cards.

Below are the exact words of the Registrar Below:

=========================================

"For the 2017 UTME, we have taken a decision to commence the sale of the form soon. Within the next two weeks , we will be out. The reason for this is that we are making all arrangements that ought to be made. We have changed the process of payment, no more scratch card selling. We need to put the right architecture in place and we have put this in place.

“The examination will be coming up later than usual. This is to make sure we take into consideration the interest of the students. We are going to conduct the UTME in May. It will not clash with any SSCE examinations

I did not sit here or my management did not fix the date. We sat down with all examination bodies with their timetables and we agreed to create this window."

"Normally, we conduct our examinations around March and the results will be ready within two to three days. But when do we need the results? It is always between July and August. This gives room for all forms of suspicion. If you go on the net, you will see people claiming that they could help candidates to upgrade their results because the results are lying fallow between March and July.

“Now we want to shorten the period in such a way that the time between the examination and when the results will be used will be very short. There will be no opportunity for anybody to even dream of upgrading results.

“We are also using that opportunity to communicate with other Examination bodies like WAEC, NECO and NABTEB to ensure that we do not make our examinations mutually exclusive. Somebody is taking WAEC examinations, he wants to take JAMB but in some cases due to clash of timetable, he wants to sacrifice one for the other.

“So, we have harmonized in such a way that the period we are going to use for our examination, all other examination bodies will not have examinations during the period.
=========================================

Asked how many candidates will sit for UTME this year, the Registrar said the agency is expecting about 1.7million.

That figure (1.7m candidates) was last year’s figure and we do not expect less this year. We expect about 1.5million candidates for UTME and about 200,000 and 300,000 candidates for Direct Entry. That was how we arrived at the figure and that is the figure we are also expecting, “he said.

“I or the management will not promise a hitch-free examination because when you are doing the type of re-engineering we are doing, you cannot say that there will be no hitches. But we believe that we are on top of it and whatever problem arises, we will solve it.

“Everybody will however have fair treatment and everybody will be well-treated. This is what I can assure Nigerians.

By the above we can now deduce that the registration is likely to commence from next month March, 2017.

So stay tuned as we will inform you of any latest coming from JAMB as time goes on.

NABTEB Releases Nov/Dec 2016 Examination Results

The National Business Technical and Examination Board has released the Nov/Dec 2016 examination results.

According to reports, a total of 1, 394 out of the 45,974 candidates who sat for the Nov/Dec 2016 NABTEB-organised examinations were caught over examination malpractice.

Also, out of 21, 476 candidates about 53 percent, who sat for NBC and NTC examinations scored five credits and above, with English Language and Mathematics.

The Registrar of NABTEB in Edo, Mrs Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, gave the figure on Tuesday while announcing the release of the results.
The registrar said that modalities put in place by the board to curtail examination malpractice were still intact to reduce the proportion.

According to the West African Examination Council Head Of National Department Mr. Olutise Isaac Adenipekun he said that the reason of the extension was to create room for school and students yet to register and submit their details to do so before the new deadline date.
He urged all schools to be as fast they could be with the registration exercise as there might be no room for further extension.
Candidates are also warned that this examination is strictly for Senior Secondary School Students as no schools are allowed to register external candidates.
